Early Morning Downtown Eugene
Eugene's downtown is quite dead. There are lots of empty buildings. The redeeming element on the streets are the flowers in hanging baskets and planters.
Linn is sitting by Ken Kesey's statue at Broadway and Willamette. Ken in bronze is reading a book to children.
In the pool at the club this morning Linn and I were remembering the songs we learned as children. I remember 'Count your Blessings' and come back to thinking about how good it was for a young child to learn that.
Count your blessings. Name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
Another one I remember is 'Little Purple Pansies.'
Little purple pansies, touched with yellow gold, growing in one corner of the garden old.
We are very tiny but must try, try, try, just one heart to gladden, you and I.
Though I am no longer a church goer I recognize the value of teaching little children important values.

My sweet new succulent
I haven't many plants, just four. The succulents will do OK if I am away and they are not watered often. My fushia is suffering from the heat. The basil is improving since I put it in a larger pot. I regret not having a place to grow a tomato but such is life. We don't always have what we want. We can want what we have.

Huge Sadness
The news from the Middle East is grim. The violence is very wrong. What a waste of life and resources! The setback is terrible. A time of cessation of all agression on both sides is called for---a cooling off period. Too bad there are not any good channels of diplomacy established and our country has lost credibility in the world. Woe! Woe!

The clear truth
The latest New Yorker has an article, 'The Agent', by Lawrence Wright about how we missed intercepting 9/11 by not having the right communication channels between the FBI and the CIA. The information that was needed was there but not available to the right people, perhaps from professional jealosy. It breaks my heart to read this. This is a griping article. I think that good people make a difference and there are good people in the world.

Have you ever noticed
how many TV television anchors and announcers are blond women with long hair? What does this mean?

An Inconvenient Truth
We saw this film yesterday. I grieve that Gore is not our president. How could our country have fallen into such a decline, taken over by unscrupulous power grabbers, not moral men? Somehow, this must all be straightened out. There are good people who are aware and who can have influence. I find evidence of them in various places, like c-span, some blogs, and where I might not expect.
Perhaps George Bush is 'the healthiest' president as announced on the news yesterday because he isn't bothered by what he has done----or what because of him, Cheney has directed.
